Chilled Sundays at the Lourensford Harvest Market

Autumn has officially made it’s appearance and in the Cape that means cool mornings, warm, perfectly still days and certain trees and vineyards turning glorious shades  of red.

One of the nicer things to do on an autumn Sunday is browse around outdoor markets, and Somerset West is lucky enough to have one set in one of the oldest and most beautiful wine estates in the country, Lourensford Wine Estate. The Lourensford Harvest Market has been running since 12th of October last year and has 77 rustic wooden stands filled with fresh produce, beverages and craft vendors, all housed under a permanent roof structure.

Start your morning visit with the perfect cup of java from the Magnificent Barista Boys (and they are indeed magnificent) and then sample some of the goodies on offer while deciding what’s for lunch. Try Eden all Natural peanut butters (try the Hot and Spicy for a kick with a difference) , Stone Hill Olives, and for the more health-conscious, get your cup of anti-oxidant packed fresh fruit and veggie juices to go.

Lunch options, amongst others include Indian fare from Mistress of Spices, Chinese at Tao’s Yum Dim Sum (and yes, it is yummy) and Ghenwa’s Lebanese Cooking Club (try her freshly baked quiches and divine hummus).

Now we get to the serious business. No day out is complete without dessert and you don’t know what you’re missing if you haven’t yet tried Moro Gelato’s pure Italian handmade gelato, made from only fresh fruit, milk and real cream. Stefano Moro and Heine van Wyk are truly passionate about their craft and this is evident in their gelato, flavours include Cioccolato, Limone, Mango, Herzogg Cookie and Portofino. Their Pistachio is the best I have ever tasted. Ever. Really. Get some!

Other sweet offerings include Pure Pancakes, One Sweet Day confectionery, Swirling’s soft-serve and real fruit slushies and Sweet Cillie’s freshly baked American Style Cheesecakes. Mmmm.

And lastly, but certainly not least, you can enjoy Lourensford wines, and ABRU Brewing Company’s craft beer (which is made on the premises) caters for the beer lovers out there.
